ULTRASONIC TEST TANKS
The use of ultrasonics in NDT has been long established. Castlet has applied the ultrasonics technology to an industrial, semi-automated process for assuring the absence of cracks and surface deformities in high speed gas turbine compressor blades.
The system utilises a motorised rotating platform within a water filled test tank, on which the test sample is located. The ultrasonic transmitter and receiver are mounted on a servo-controlled transport framework, the position of which can be linearly changed in three axes over the length, width, and depth of the tank. The angular orientation of the ultrasonic head can be changed by +/- 90 degrees over the full range of axes, thus permitting the sensing of the test sample to be made in any direction. The computer controlled servosystem can be programmed to follow the outline of any test sample, and to record the ultrasonic reflective signature at any point on the sample.
The test tank, and all moving parts in the assembly are made of stainless steel, and the tank is 1m x 1.5m, with a depth of 1m.
